Universal Design

Universal design is a smart design style that allows for universal accessibility in a home.  Everyone can use a home with universal design and it can often be difficult to detect universal design features.  Using this smart design style allows for seniors to age-in-place, accomodates for a household member with a disability, and makes life easier with small children.  If you are interested in a universal design remodel or would like to perform some updates to make your space more accessible for everyone, contact us and we can meet to discuss a plan for incorporating universal design into your home.

 

Features often included in Universal Design Remodels:

• Wider doorways

• No-step entry

• Wide hallways

• Extra floor space

 

Features that can be added or updated in most homes:

• Floors and bathtubs with no-slip surfaces

• Comfort-height toilets

• Grab bars and rails

• Good lighting

• Lever style door handles

• Lever door handles and rocker light switch (easier for people with poor hand strength)

• ADA compliant appliances

• In the kitchen: raise base cabinets for less bending, add drawers with pull-outs, table height work spaces to accomodate wheelchairs, add pulls instead of knobs for easier grip.
